Haiti and Perspective

My first post of 2010 is not an update about our family (although I am sure there will be one soon), an attempt at being a gourmet chef (more recipes to come too!), or an anecdote about our days with our two boys (I am guilty of not sharing enough of these sweet stories with you). I just needed to take a moment to reflect on Haiti in light of the earthquake that hit last week. Jason and I have been following the story via the NBC Nightly News and online articles, and each time a segment about the country airs I have immense sorrow for those suffering through these times. It is truly overwhelming to think of the total devastation both physically and emotionally that thousands of people are going through. The sorrow that I feel is the kind that hits you in the gut, makes you feel weak, and puts you into perspective. I am helpless, knowing that at the present moment, there is not much that I can do. The one thing I am sure of is that I can not go about these days acting as if the pain of so many people does not exist. I will be thinking, praying, and hoping for the country of Haiti as I continue to realize that my problems are not so problematic after all. I will be hopeful for those that are still hanging on, and I will feel the joy of those that have found loved ones. I will continue to empathize with the people of Haiti and consider the ways that I might, in some way, become part of the story.
