Costa Rica, A Web Log

About the trip to Costa Rica- it was something.

We were fortunate enough to have my sister, brother-in-law, and parents watching our boys for a week (a week! I will repay the favor!) so we could celebrate ten years of wedded bliss in a truly beautiful country. Relaxing might have been one of our main goals for the week; the first thing I did when we arrived, was take a nap- a very much anticipated, uninterrupted, peaceful nap. And we did spend plenty of time during the week resting by the pool, mojito in hand.
The pool, however, was no match for the Pacific.
I was also no match for the Pacific. Our first time in the water I was taken out by a large wave, mid sentence, and the ocean tossed me around several times, thinking nothing of it. I was covered in sand, you can see some of the remnants in the picture below. What you can't see, is the sand that was in my hair for the remainder of the trip. I think I still have sand in my hair.

We had some really good food while we were there. It was our first time at an all inclusive resort, and
we took full advantage of all the different dining options there. We tried really hard not to stuff our
faces all week, there were even a few times we didn't order a dessert, unreal!

I do promise that we didn't sit around all week eating to our hearts'content . We had one day of excursions, that began with horse back riding on a gorgeous mountain side. My horse, whom I named Rocio, had a mind of his own, and kept trying to separate from the group by heading down some ominous looking paths. Jay and his horse had a bad relationship from the start. Every time I looked back, his unnamed horse had his nostrils flared, and looked utterly annoyed.

All of our hard work on horseback was rewarded with a trip to a steam room, mud bath, and a hot spring.

Then we took the plunge and went zip lining through the rain forest canopy. Jay loved it. I was a little too worried about breaking properly to fully appreciate the experience. Now that I've got the hang of it (HA!), I need to go again someday.

And finally, do you want to see something really embarrassing? This is a super fast water slide powered by natural sprng water and built into the mountainside. Promise you won't show anyone?
So all of this was amazing. But, really, my favorite part of the whole trip was speaking Spanish. It took me a day or so to get warmed up to speaking there, but once I started, I couldn't stop. It was pretty fabulous being able to communicate with such amazing people. I loved being able to talk with the natives, hear their stories, and learn things about the country that we otherwise may not have.
Here were three of our favorite bartenders, my good buddies by the end of the trip!
I would go to Costa Rica again in a heart beat, there is so much that we didn't see, I know. Although, I'm sure that when we get the chance to travel out of the country again, we will explore another part of the world. Oh, and as much as we enjoyed each other's company, next time, we want to travel with family and friends. We kept thinking that it would enrich the experience to be with a whole group of people we love. That way, we won't be the only ones on the dance floor.
What do you say, do you want to come with next time?

  1. Erin,
Your trip sounded wonderful-exactly what you two deserve. Your part about the horses reminded me of when you would come to the farm with me. I'm so happy you basked in all of Costa Rica-the sun, the water, the language. Agreed-traveling alone as a couple is terrific, but sharing it with loved ones is what truly makes it a memory. Next time, I'm in!

    1. Avi! During the horseback ride, I was reminiscing about our days mucking stalls at the barn. Can't believe how much fun we had while shoveling manure! I was also remembering my jaunts on Heypone and Honey. Those were good days.
